About Ty Caton
Ty Caton Vineyards is located on the site of a winery and vineyards in the newly designated Moon Mountain AVA in Sonoma Valley, founded in the 1920’s and run consistently through prohibition and into the 1940’s. The original Sonoma winery, crush- pad and house still stand as a testament to the winegrowing history of the land. The Caton family purchased the property in 1981 with the idea of restoring and expanding the vineyards over the beautiful rolling hills.
Ty Caton Vineyards was founded in 1997 when Ty Caton began developing vineyards on his family’s estate. Located adjacent to some of the most famed vineyards in California, he saw the potential for growing world-class grapes. Ty carved out and created 40 acres of beautiful hillside vineyards spread out over 107 acres of natural habitat. He attained a deep respect for the vineyards and a passion for grape growing, and decided that he wanted to see the grapes through their journey to the bottle. In 2000, he made his first vintage of wine, mentored by his neighbor and friend, Peter Mathis. His Sonoma Valley wines were met with immediate critical acclaim that has continued throughout the years.
Ty manages the entire winemaking process, from planting the vines, to farming the grapes, to making the wine – all in Sonoma Valley. By using exclusively estate grown grapes he is able to have complete control over the process and personally tend to the wine from soil to glass.
Located on the western slopes of the Mayacama Mountains, the Caton Vineyard is a rugged setting ideally situated to grow premier grapes in Sonoma Valley. The vineyard is blessed with an ideal climate with warm sunshine during the day and cool evening breezes. The 40 acre vineyard is spread out over 107 acres of steeply contoured hillsides that are as unique as the wines that come from it. The vineyard is divided into 21 blocks, each defined by different sun exposure, soil type, incline, and altitude varying over 300 feet. Each block is planted with the grape variety best suited to the specific conditions. The blocks are hand harvested and vinted individually to retain the distinct character of the vineyard and create expressive wines with distinct terroir. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petite Sirah and Syrah are planted. The Ty’s Red and TyTanium wines are a perfect showcase for Ty’s blending abilities. Gems in the portfolio include the Ballfield Syrah and the Upper Bench Merlot, which both reflect their unique and distinct mountaintop vineyard settings.
The Caton Vineyard is made up of layers of volcanic soil with rocks that lie just below the surface, creating resistance for the vines as their roots search for nutrients in the soil. This stresses the vines, which creates smaller grapes with thicker skins and more concentrated flavors.
The Caton Vineyard is certified sustainable and we are committed to our stewardship of the land. Sustainable farming allows us to produce extraordinary wines of uncommon character.
